Smart cities and covid-19

The European Commission has selected 88 new cities to participate in the Intelligent Cities Challenge, a programme that continues the Digital Cities Challenge and will begin this September. The programme will last two years and is an initiative of the European Union to promote the digital transformation of cities and help alleviate the global consequences of covid-19.

Following the evaluation of applications, 88 cities have been selected, including 16 Spanish cities (Alcobendas, Alcoy, Algeciras, Alicante, Cartagena, Castellón de la Plana, the consortium of the municipalities of Gava and Castelldefels, Gijón, Granada, Las Rozas, Logroño, Molina de Segura, Pamplona, Terrassa, Torrente and Barcelona). All of them will have to overcome the challenge imposed by the ICC.

Selected cities will receive personalized guidance, participate in group formations and high-level events, exchange knowledge with other members, and propose large-scale changes collectively. All this, making the most of new technologies to achieve sustainable, intelligent and green growth.

The programme will last two years and is an initiative of the European Union to promote digital transformation in cities and help alleviate the global consequences of Covid-19.

In this sense, it promotes different actions to promote the development of innovative ecosystems and thus create smart and sustainable growth in the cities of Europe, all with funding from the European Commission, which will lead the programme. The ICC will be presented to all selected participants at a telematics meeting this July.
